Subiaco shock Sharks in Geraldton

A dominant second half was enough for Subiaco to score a comfortable 55-point win over East Fremantle, taking their season tally to two wins from as many games.

The Lions outmuscled a lacklustre East Fremantle at WA Country Builders Stadium in Geraldton, 16.12 (108) to 6.16 (52) this afternoon.

Subiaco’s skill and efficiency going forward stood out with the returning Shaun Hildebrandt and Jarrod Kayler-Thomson influential in the win.

Bradd Daziell flew the flag for the Sharks who were inaccurate in front of goal and wasteful with possession in the forward half.

Rubbing salt into East Fremantle’s wounds, Cameron Eardley and Stephen Dodd were both reported for striking.

The Sharks reduced the margin to one goal early in the third quarter before a string of seven unanswered goals from the Lions put the result beyond doubt.

Subiaco capitalised on a wasteful East Fremantle in the first half.

The Lions got off to the perfect start with a mark and goal to Matthew Boland inside the opening minute.

They booted another four in the term to the Sharks’ one, off the boot of Ryan Lester-Smith. His quick snap was originally called a point by the goal umpire, but was the decision was overturned following a confrontation between the goal and field umpire.

Boston Williamson kicked the first two goals of the second quarter for the Sharks.

East Fremantle dominated possession and field position, but were wasted numerous goal scoring opportunities.

Subiaco made them pay towards the end of the half through goals from Brett Mahoney and Rhys Waters.

Subiaco led 7.4 (46) to 3.9 (27) at the half-time break.

East Fremantle started the second half with a quick goal to Daziell and then James Bristow was able to

reduced the Lions’ lead to just six points.

Subiaco responded by kicking the last three goals of the third quarter through Justin Joyce, Shane Yarran and Kayler-Thomson.
