Rock 'n' roll with a bit of soul

Zing: Boom! Bap! Pow! will add flavour and spice to the Nukara Rhythm and Fire Fest this weekend.

More than a year has passed since WA music firecrackers Boom! Bap! Pow! have set Mid West dancefloors alight.

Fittingly, their return will be at this weekend’s Nukara Rhythm and Fire Fest.

In the last year, the five-piece have released their album, So Heavy, which generated the popular single, Suit.

Suit has earned national and international attention for the band, due to its use in television commercial for Bonds campaign and a US furniture company.

Boom! Bap! Pow! front woman Novac Bull said it was a dream-like scenario for the band.

“They are really digging it in the States,” she said.

“We are really happy with how it turned out. It’s surreal and quite mindblowing that Suits would reach that far given we are an unsigned act in Perth.”

Bull is joined by drummer David Salvaire, guitar Paul Hines, bassist Clint Bracknell and saxophonist Dylan Hooper to form the charismatic group.

Boom! Bap! Pow! have put in the hard yards, touring nationally with Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed and performances at Laneway, Big Day Out and Queenscliff music festivals.

Their brand of Rock ‘n’ Soul has been labelled as infectious, cheeky pop and is a progression from their earlier 50s inspired doo-wop sound.

Bull said the soul element of their music was at the core of their sound.

“I think soul is the essence of most music, people just don’t realise it,” she said.

“It literally is the heart and soul of music.

“We have rock ‘n’ roll sensibilities but we are so strongly driven by soul I don’t think we will ever lose that.

"Plus it is a nod to our soul forefathers and foresisters."

Bull said she hoped their lively and playful set would get Nukara punters in the mood for a bit of dancing.

“I always have a good time when we perform,” she said.

“I can be in the shittiest mood, but as soon a we start playing something shifts — you can’t be angry at the world when you are onstage doing this.

“I hope people let their inhibitions go, dance and just have a bloody good time.”

Suit has also been nominated for WAM Song Of The Year 2013 in the Pop category.

Nukara Rhythm and Fire Fest will be held this Saturday, September 14 at Nukara Farm.

Boom! Bap! Pow! will be joined by Dilip N the Davs and Jordan McRobbie. The festival will also include fire sculptures and performance by Mid West artists.

Tickets are $75 and available from Geraldton CD Centre. Credit card bookings can be made by calling 99214821. Camping overnight is encouraged and is $10 per person.
