Five Geraldton Karate Academy martial artists will represent Western Australia at the upcoming ISKF World Titles.
Junior competitors Daniel Fraser, Anthony Arangio and Austin Merrett will team with academy teammates Alicia Constantino and Jason Merrett.
The five competitors will be competing in Cebu City in the Philippines on November 5-14.
The five Geraldton representatives are the only martial artists from WA that will travel to the international competition.
Constantino and Jason are on the Australian senior national team while the trio of teenagers will represent the green and gold in the junior division.
Geraldton Karate Academy instructor, Pasco Constantino said all five competitors have earned their plane tickets to the World Championships.
“For the junior competition, martial artists need to do well at club level and enter the State championships and nationals and that makes them eligible for nomination,” he said.
“For the seniors, they have to win competitions around Australia and be selected by the selection committee.”
Alicia and Jason recently returned home from Queensland where they underwent a rigorous training camp and competed in the Queensland State titles.
They trained with the six other members of the Australian team as international-quality instructors put them through their paces.
Next week, the pair will travel to South Australia and compete in the SA State titles.
Pasco expects both competitors to perform well in November but said the Geraldton juniors would benefit most from the experience.
“They are really going there for the experience and if they win, it is a bonus,” he said.
“I nominated them because they are doing really well at training.”
