Perth attempts sandcastle world record

While many carry the distant dream of exploring the globe with a job they enjoy, Jennifer Rossen has achieved such a lifestyle - by building sandcastles.

Known as “Jenny the Sandcastle Girl”, the 48-year-old professional sand sculptor, who is originally from Perth, has won four world championships.

Jenny’s first world title was in 1999, which led her to Dubai – a place she has called home for the past fifteen years.

Oprah Winfrey has featured her work and last year she sculpted sandy renditions of the world’s tallest buildings for Shiekh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates.

“It was the dream job,” she said. “I had eight international sand sculptors working with me.”

Now the artist is back in her hometown, to turn her talents towards breaking a world record for charity – the most sandcastles made in one hour.

“We’ll need 2,231 sandcastles… each has to be 61 centimeters tall and 61 centimeters square at the base, with turret bucket of sand placed on top,” she said.

To achieve such a milestone, Jenny will need around 2000 participants at Cottesloe Beach on Saturday the 28th of March.

To help those wishing to compete in the event, Jenny has given away some of her trade secrets in a short instructional video

“I call it the ‘Bin Bucket Pound Up’ and it’s worth learning how to do it because it is the basis of all sandcastles,” she said.

A big breakfast will be served before the event at 9am, with the world record attempt beginning at 10am.

Money raised from the event will go towards the West Australian Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service (WLRHS).
