A man has accidentally thrown away $1.25 million in winning lottery tickets.
The New York Daily New reports that the Pennsylvania punter bought 25 tickets last year but threw them away after he misread the winning numbers.
The winning slips have now expired and the winnings will go unclaimed, according to the Daily News.
The newsagent who sold the winning tickets told the York Daily Record that the man had bought the same numbers every day for some time.
His numbers - 4-3-4-1-8 - finally came up on March 13, 2013, but the prize went unclaimed.
The New York Daily News says the regular customer thought he had lost again and trashed the tickets valued at $50,000 each.
The prize expired after a year.
"He was mad," said the newsagent. "He was so mad he played $400 that day."
The Pennsylvania Lottery told the Daily News they had tried to find the winner, issuing a statement earlier this year asking lottery players to "check the drawer by the sink, under the couch and in the glove box".
"We do what we can to notify winners, but sometimes, it's just not enough," a spokesman said.
