Police had an unusually enthusiastic welcome at a pub in the Northern Territory after a hens' night party mistook them for strippers.

The officers responded to a disturbance at the Humpty Doo Tavern in Darwin's rural area overnight on Thursday only to find all was quiet, Darwin police have confirmed.

Trying the nearby Humpty Doo Hotel, the officers encountered a group of women celebrating a hens' night.

They were greeted with shouts of glee hailing them as strippers. They managed to escape wearing their clothes and with dignity intact, police said.
