OPINION: Park manager L. Galati responds to a social worker's claim that homeless people are paying between $300 and $400 a week for a tent site in Geraldton.
As you feel very sorry for people in this situation, I would like to take the opportunity to point out a very important detail which tends to be overlooked while people are getting upset over prices for tent sites.
Quite often, a site for two people is around $230 to $250 per week.
Each additional person is $10 extra per night.
What you are not being told is these sites actually have four to eight people on them, which is why they are paying $300 to $400 per week.
They use the toilets, showers, cooking facilities are free, most parks have a swimming pool and playgrounds.
There is no bond on the site.
A lady told me last week it was easy money for them to stay on a site because she gets extra payments for her children.
If these people were in a house they would be paying $300 to $450 rent per week, plus a bond, plus power, water and gas.
Nobody is being ripped off and it is in no way targeting the homeless.
