Councillor seeks end to ‘IGA Sunday monopoly’

The fate of unrestricted seven-day trading in Geraldton now lies in the hands of the Council after councillor Ron Ashplant filed a motion for deregulated trading this week.

The motion is calling for total deregulation, which would effectively enable all retailers to trade 24 hours, seven days a week if they chose to.

It will be put to the City councillors for a majority vote at the Ordinary Meeting on December 18.

If successful the proposal will go out for a public consultation period of 42 days.

It will then come back before the Council in March for consideration before it is submitted to the Commerce Minister for approval.
