Racing frocks at the ready

Thongs, boots and cowboy hats might be the attire of choice for many East Kimberley race-goers but some local women will be embracing the opportunity to bring high fashion to the Kimberley.

With the local racing season starting this weekend, women like Emma Haynes have been fine-tuning their outfits for meetings at Wyndham and Kununurra.

This Sunday’s Halls Creek Cup, held at Wyndham, is Ladies Day.

Mrs Haynes said she would be wearing a fascinator but remained tight-lipped about her complete outfit.

“I am going to wear a fascinator as I don’t like hats,” she said.

“The rest is top secret.”

The Halls Creek and Wyndham Cups, held on Sunday, August 12, and Saturday, August 18, respectively, are two of the biggest events on the East Kimberley social calendar.

Mrs Haynes said she would be attending both.

“It’s the highlight of the year and it’s good to dress up,” she said.

Gates open at 11am at both Wyndham race meetings.

Entry costs $15 for adults and free for children under 12.

There will be full bar facilities and food available and two-up starts after the last race.

Tickets for the Under the Stars Race Ball after the races on August 18 are $35 from Travelworld Kununurra or Kimberley Motors Wyndham, or at the gate for $40.
