Melbourne Cup pays visit

The Emirates Melbourne Cup is coming to Geraldton.

Residents will be able to see the cup when it visits the City on Sunday.

This year is the 10th anniversary of the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour and Geraldton has been chosen as one of only a handful of cities in Australia for a flying visit.

The tour aims to unearth the personal, colourful and inspirational stories of the Emirates Melbourne Cup when it visits regional towns and cities.

Touring with the cup is WA champion jockey, 1999 Melbourne Cup winner, John Marshall who raced on Rogan Josh.

City manager of arts, culture and events, Chris Budhan, said the tour is a fantastic opportunity for all members of the public to experience.

“Having the Emirates Melbourne Cup tour Geraldton is an exciting event and all members of the public can delight in the amazing opportunity,” he said.

Dr Budhan said the tour will be a captivating experience for those who love and know the history.

“Come along, have your photo taken, have some fun and light refreshments and stay to watch the screening of the movie The Cup,” he said.

The cup will be on display on Sunday at a free community event at La Fiamma Sporting Club from noon until 3pm.

There will be a question and answer session, photo opportunity and a loop on last season’s soccer matches; there will be charity matches of various teams, including penalty shoot-out, where John Marshall will kick it off.

A free community event at Queens Park Theatre will be displaying the cup from 3.30pm, the public will be welcomed by live music on arrival, including horse-related songs and canapes served from Dalgleish Catering.

Deputy Mayor Neil McIlwaine will introduce members of the Victoria Race Club and afterwards there will be the screening of the legendary film The Cup.

These free events are sponsored by the City of Greater Geraldton, La Fiamma Sporting Inc, National Australia Bank and Dalgleish Catering.
