Opposition leader Tony Abbott has been ejected from the lower house by the deputy speaker.

During a fiery question time, deputy speaker Anna Burke asked Mr Abbott to withdraw comments directed at Prime Minister Julia Gillard “without qualification”.

Mr Abbott said: “I withdraw but it’s still an untrue statement.”

Ms Burke then told Mr Abbott to withdraw from the chamber.

“I asked you, as you approached the dispatch box, to do it without qualification - you could not help yourself,” she said.

Mr Abbott left the chamber and returned an hour later.
