Volvo joins the high-voltage set

Volvo has become the latest manufacturer to start production of an electric vehicle.

And the Swedish car maker intends to start delivering its C30 EV to leasing customers, mainly companies, authorities and governmental bodies in Europe, in August.

But we won't be seeing any on the roads in Australia any time soon.

Volvo Car Australia public affairs manager Jaedene Hudson said the company would have to see if the car would be viable in our market.

The electric variant is being built on the same platform as the petrol and diesel variants with the batteries installed where the fuel tank normally sits and also in a special compartment in the car's central tunnel.

It can be recharged from a regular household power point and will take about seven hours to fully recharge.

The C30E will have a range of 150km, a top speed of 130km/h and will go from 0-100km/h in 10.9 seconds.

There has been no suggestion of pricing but you can expect to pay a hefty premium on the current $38,450 starting price.
