Megane on a mission

Renault’s Megane GT Line has various added comforts and trimmings, inside and out.

With the introduction of the 2014 Megane, Renault further establishes its brand identity with an instantly recognisable and yet uniquely "Renault" styling theme consistent across the model range.

The new Megane is available in four-door hatch or wagon variants. The entry-level hatch is the Authentique, available in a 1.2-litre petrol manual or electronic dual-clutch auto, with the economical 1.5-litre diesel in auto only.

The Authentique is perfect for the budget conscious. It's light and nimble as a city commuter, with the simple necessities in a modest interior.

Move up to the GT Line and the manual gets dropped in favour of the auto for both petrol and diesel power plants. There are a few more bells and whistles with interior upgrades and Renault's R-Link technology combining navigation and the like via a large seven-inch touch screen.

The signature GT embellishments include larger 17-inch alloys, colour-coded bumpers with highlights on wing and body trim complemented by smart LED daytime running lamps.

But more importantly, the GT steps up to the mark for a more engaging drive with improvements in chassis set-up.

The diesel offers good low to mid-range performance with an indicated 4.5L/100km, delivering its torque where needed for a relaxed drive.

Those wanting to exploit the GT's better handling will enjoy the petrol. It's no hog in the power stakes but keep this little engine on song with the tacho actively working the rev range and there's fun to be had. Drop below the sweet spot and the auto will momentarily remind you there are some limitations to the 1.2's enthusiastic ability. Achieving 5.6L/100km when mated to the EDC transmission, Renault claims a fuel consumption reduction of 28 per cent over the outgoing petrol engine.

The GT Premium package offers a little something extra to pamper its owner with heated seats, leather and cup holders for the frappuccino as you cruise along enjoying the warm sunshine through your panoramic sunroof.

But if you're more the leather jacket, Versace sunglasses, double espresso aficionada, then the 2.0-litre GT 220 six-speed manual winding out to 162kW is your mark. Spirited, lively and willing to impress with a strong surge from the 340Nm on tap, the range- topping 220 combines responsive steering via the 18-inch rims and sports tyres, with strong braking from the larger discs backed by eager acceleration. The 220 will bring a smile to the enthusiast who craves a succession of tight corners and short straights.

There's even R.S. Monitor 2.0 integrated in the R-Link touch screen for live display of vehicle data. The all-inclusive and fun-to-use system - the only one of its kind on the market - displays information from 15 sensors, torque and power curves, and a CG diagram of longitudinal and lateral accelerations.

You can see how much fun you are having.

For those wanting a little more room and the practicality of a wagon, the base Dynamique is well appointed with clever design elements such as the folding front passenger seat to allow for cargo lengths up to 1.5m.

No more problems with those weekend runs to IKEA.

As expected, the GT Line and Premium have additional comforts and trimmings, while the GT220 Wagon rounds out the range, cutting a mean stance for good street appeal and successfully delivering on sports performance wrapped in European style.

There's a host of standard safety features but sadly only the GT Premium and GT 220 include Renault's Visio System with Lane Departure Warning, automatic high-low beam headlights and rear-view camera as standard.

The Megane, with it's unusual Renault flair, is an eye-catcher for anyone looking for some perky personality in their car.
