Tactile textures, neutral colours livened up with splashes of colour, and layers of textured accessories are among the key bedding trends for autumn-winter 2015.

“This season we're seeing a shift away from the bolder shades, with a focus on a more neutral colour palette combined with blacks and greys,” said Kira Cardenosa, director of Perth-based online linen purveyor Mulberry Threads Co. “It’s also all about injecting colour with softer hues like pale pinks, greens and yellows.”

Julie White, of The Bedroom Gallery in Canning Vale, said timber and upholstered beds worked well with this season’s bed linen themes. “Whether it’s the rich, warm tones of our timber suites, or the very popular WA-made upholstered drawer bases with plush opulent headboards and custom made in hundreds of beautiful fabrics, you can achieve a look of warmth and comfort,” she said.

Ms White likes these pieces paired with throws and cushions in natural tones of grey and cream, while she said teal and lime shades were a prevailing fashion. “Pick up the highlight colours in bed linen and lamp shades,” she said.

Bedshed stylist Jen Ratten said raw and recycled timber beds were having a moment, and complemented the warm natural tones in this season’s linens. “Natural fibres of linen and wool always feel luxurious,” she said. “In addition, graphic prints are still trending, so update those by adding a chunky knit or cushion.”

Ms Ratten said other trends included texture, layering of different patterns, and tribal and native prints.

Tracie Ellis, creative director of Melbourne-based bedding and homewares label Aura, said she loved the Nordic-inspired look for winter, which uses neutral tones and is inspired by nature. “At Aura we are all about vibrancy, colour and pattern so this neutral colour palette is set off by splashes of fiery coral, mint, rose and metallics,” she said.

Ms Cardenosa said basics could be enlivened by a splash of colour. “If there is a lot of neutral happening in your bedroom, it’s a great idea to add a hint of colour with your bedsheets and pillows,” she said.

Ms Ellis likes linen with the same inter-seasonal appeal. “Our linen cotton sheets are amazing — they’re warm in winter and then cool in summer so they’re perfect all year round,” she said.

“However, rich textiles and texture are the hallmarks of our winter collection this year.”

If your doona doesn’t cut it come winter, Ms Ellis recommended creating a layered look on your bed.

“This will allow you to adjust how warm you are in bed throughout the night without getting up,” she said.

“Keep a throw on the end of your bed to add an extra layer of warmth when the temperature drops in the early hours.”

She also suggested a quilted coverlet and velvet cushions to add luxurious softness, and chunky knits and layered linens to create a warm retreat.

Ms Ratten agreed that throw rugs and cushions in luxe, tactile fabrics were a great way to update your bedding. “Chunky knits, velvets and faux fur really add warmth and cosiness to your bedroom for the winter months,” she said.

Ms Cardenosa said if you’re ready to invest in a good-quality quilt, choose a material that will keep you toasty while letting your body breathe, such as Mulberry Threads Co’s 100 per cent Mulberry Silk Quilt.

One of her most popular items was the organic bamboo sheet set in Frost. Ms Cardenosa said bamboo’s thermal regulating properties and incredible softness made these sheets ideal across seasons.
