Growing greater awareness

Joanna Griggs and Jeff Kennett are ambassadors for Garden Releaf.

Beyondblue has teamed up with independent garden centres around Australia for this weekend’s Garden Releaf initiative.

The ambassadors for Garden Releaf are Johanna Griggs, host of Better Homes and Gardens and a member of the board of beyondblue, and former Victoria premier Jeff Kennett AC, chairman of beyondblue. The event will see more than 100 garden centres holding events designed to encourage green thumbs of all ages to pull their gardening gloves on, with the aim of promoting the positive impact that gardening can have on physical and mental health while also raising awareness about depression and raising funds for the mental health organisation.

The theme of the weekend is, fittingly, “something blue”, so expect displays of blue-flowering plants, blue decorations and blue-themed treats, as well as fun activities, gardening talks, giveaways, face-painting, sausage sizzles, live music and more.

Local nurseries taking part include Guildford Town Garden Centre, which will host kids’ gardening workshops and a sundowner session featuring guest speakers from the horticultural community including Habitat columnist Deryn Thorpe, drinks and a silent auction, with all proceeds going to beyondblue. To RSVP contact the centre.

Waldecks is also taking part, with the Stirling store offering blue-themed plants including fresh blueberry plants for sale, Mr Fothergill’s seeds giveaways, eco-friendly gardening workshops, talks on hydroponics and organic gardening, and more.
