The Lip - Mocha move by McLaren Vale

Long-time beer drinker Ross Lewis casts his eye over the kegs from here and abroad.

Another of the unique brews from the Great Australasian Beer Spectapular is enjoying a life post-festival.

South Australian producer McLaren Vale Beer Company has decided their supposed one-off brew Faux Nero was so good it is letting more drinkers enjoy the taste.

McLaren Vale unveiled a white coffee stout for the popular GABS long weekend.

And now it is being released under the company’s VALE/EXP line. The label fits in with McLaren Vale’s regular branding for their Ales and Lager but takes on a yellow colour. Unfortunately, the brew is only available in kegs at present.

Those lucky enough to get a sample of VALE/EXP/006 at GABS were impressed by the coffee and creamy texture. It was a bit like a mocha milkshake without abandoning a beer mouthfeel.

Mclaren Vale head brewer, Jeff Wright, is a coffee connoisseur and fires up the brewery’s coffee machine continually through the workday.

The inspiration for this new beer came while drinking a coffee martini.

“Firstly, I wanted to trick people’s tastebuds with a beer that has the flavours of a stout but is white in colour,” Wright said.

“We used wheat and ale malts in the mash ad added freshly roasted Ethiopian Nikesse coffee beans from popular Adelaide roaster Bar 9.

“Then we used nitrogen during keg filling gives the palette a smooth, round finish.”

VALE/EXP/006 is available at Union Hotel Newtown, The Australian Heritage Hotel, Kirribilli Hotel, Dove & Olive, Clock Hotel Surry Hills and Woolloomooloo Bay Hotel in New South Wales.

It is also available in Victoria at Young & Jackson, Robert Burns Hotel and The Brunswick Mess Hall and Jack Greene and The Winston in Tasmania.

It is only available to drinkers with a boarding pass but a Coopers’ pub has become the toast of the flying public.

The South Australian company’s Alehouse at Sydney’s T2 terminal has been named International Airport Bar of the Year by a renowned travel organisation.

The FAB awards recognised excellence in airport-specific food and beverages and Coopers got the big tick from the group last week.

Coopers marketing director, Mr Cam Pearce, said receiving international recognition for the Sydney Airport Coopers Alehouse was a real vote of confidence in the bar concept.

“We opened the Sydney Airport Coopers Alehouse in August last year following the success of the Coopers Alehouse we have been operating at the Adelaide Airport since 2005,” he said.

“We thought the concept would appeal in Sydney and it is indeed pleasing to see that it has been considered world standard.”
