Getting set to update your bikini collection for the summer months? Before breaking into a sweat about entering a change room to try on a two-piece, All of the Above Creative stylist Claire Mueller said a good - and calm - place to start was with a practical question: what do you expect from your swimwear?

"First and foremost for me is 'Will this stay on when I jump in the ocean', but someone else will be concerned about tan lines and someone else will want something that just looks cute with a sarong at the poolside bar," Ms Mueller said.

From there, it is all about finding a good fit - so that you're comfortable and confident.

"We're lucky that swimwear has moved beyond just plain one-pieces and triangle bikinis," she said.

There are now cuts to suit all different shapes.

"If you've got a full bust, look to structured styles for support, or if your tummy isn't your favourite feature, try a one-piece with a lower back for balance," she said.

As a general rule, women should avoid anything with material cut-outs on the hips, because the style can make even the slimmest frames look like they're popping out of them.

"Don't be afraid to try a range of shapes to find out what suits you best," Ms Mueller advised.

Clever panelling, especially when contrasting prints and solid colours, can be extremely flattering. Digital prints and techno details like laser cutting is gaining momentum in swimsuit designs this season and being used in innovative ways to revamp classic shapes.

"Look for dark colours around the waist or in panels that angle inwards," she said.

She also recommended taking colour cues from your everyday wardrobe.

"What colour is that dress that you always look radiant in, or the shirt that people always compliment you on," she said.

In terms of bikini faux pas, be careful with any tone that gets too close to your skin colour, Ms Mueller warned, or you could be getting looks for all the wrong reasons.
