Bridal retailer and designer Samantha Wynne has been in the wedding business for more than a decade. Here she answers some questions on the latest in bridal trends.

What is the most important thing for brides-to-be to consider when looking for a gown?

The discerning bride is always concerned with finding a unique and elegant style of gown which will showcase her personality on her wedding day and perhaps even determine the theme of her wedding. Most of our brides-to-be are in search of a bridal buying experience that makes them feel special, unique and spoilt for choice. The discerning bride wants an exclusively designed dress that is theirs to own.

How can you modernise a classic bridal look?

The key is to add contemporary embellishment and personalise the bride's look. The mono shoulder neckline has been the main feature over the last season and is again high on the list of most national and international designers. This time around designers are offering unique finishes: individually handmade silk flowers, adorned in the middle with Swarovski pearls; laser-cut flowers; flower lace embellishments; stunning Swarovski crystallised components; midriffs accented with self-embroidered and beaded motifs.

What is the must-have bridal accessory for 2011?

We're finding that our beautiful bridal belts in ivory and rose satin ribbons adorned with vintage embellishments, Chantilly laces, Swarovski beads and vintage off-cuts are extremely popular. We also have ivory washed-silk organza sashes with hand-embroidered and beaded motifs. Black belts and sashes on a white dress can also look very striking and can make the transition into your everyday wardrobe.

What are your style tips for brides who want a "destination" wedding?

One of our latest dresses is called the "Sophia Loren". It's a slinky V-neck silk chiffon gown with soft, sexy ruffles on the shoulder and a low backline, which enhances the bride's figure and certainly creates the wow factor on the back of the gown that every girl wants on her wedding day. I also love Henry Roth's gowns for 2011, which are very on trend, using tissue organza, lightweight satin and tulles in clean, classic shapes that are perfect for outdoor weddings.

What are the top five current international trends in bridal wear?

1. Hand-embroidered V-neck bodices, capped sleeves and full skirts with pockets.

2. Strapless sweetheart-shaped bodice necklines, empire waistbands with flower pins and full skirts.

3. Mono-shoulder gowns with a draped bodice and full-pleated dropped skirts.

4. Bias-strip fluted gowns in silk and organza.

5. Asymmetrical draped skirts and flowers at shoulder and hips.
