Bathroom design: Old meets new

Four designers share their insights on creating beautiful bathrooms. For Kimberley Tan, this project was about honouring the heritage of the home.

With a home more than 100 years old, Ms Tan, owner and interior designer at Studio Atelier, said she opted to blend period features with contemporary details.

“The main idea was to create an ensuite which did not feel clinical or cold but to create a sanctuary which was inviting with character and warmth that reflected the look and feel of the rest of the home,” she said.

The original lounge room was converted into a bathroom by builder RJC Construction, allowing for a big ensuite with ceilings more than 3m high and an abundance of natural light.

The classic, neutral palette includes rectified floor and wall tiles from Original Ceramics, matte black Phoenix tapware and a Cibo vanity with essastone top.

Display shelving for art, collected objects and indoor greenery, and a freestanding Caroma Aura bath under the central window sit opposite a big, custom-built mirror which reflects the natural light.

Feature pendant lights and charcoal and white circular patterned Petit White Fleur Encaustic tiles, from Jatana Interiors in Sydney, create a great focal point.

A reclaimed timber ledge adds warmth with the recycled jarrah floors in the main bedroom.

“We love its reference to the old worker’s cottage with its high ceilings and decorative cornices,” Ms Tan said.

“Whilst referencing the home’s character and history it is also the perfect blend of new with its modern-day luxuries making it the perfect space to unwind after a long day.”
