Bathroom design: Luxury living

Four designers share their insights on creating beautiful bathrooms. In this Trigg project, architect David Hillam has made the most of the home’s beachfront position.

“Capitalising on its prominent, beach-side location, this confident design balances clean lines, subdued materials, quality workmanship and inventive technologies,” architect David Hillam said of the home, which is short-listed for the 2015 Australian Institute of Architects WA Architecture Awards.

Old meets new

“Conceived as an inviting beach house, it contrasts a dramatic external form with refined interior design, creating a sanctuary of calm for its discerning residents.”

By keeping to a simple palette, a luxurious aesthetic was achieved which was amplified by the addition of a few select design choices.

“The design of the bathroom features an egg-bath and a custom basin atop a stone plinth, so the owners can bathe in luxury whilst admiring the sunset over the coast,” Mr Hillam said. “Rogerseller fixtures and a Calcutta feature splashback also feature prominently.”

Subdued, neutral materials include plentiful use of natural stone, including Black Smoke limestone, quarried in Turkey and supplied by Ibrahim International. Feature white Calcutta Statuario Venato marble from Bernini and reconstituted Retro Glass material from Forezzi was applied to walls.

“The tastes of the clients were second to none; they wanted beauty,” Mr Hillam said. “It’s all about the touch and feel; everything exudes luxury.”

The toilet, bidet, bath and bath pillar were all sourced from Artedomus and the vanity bench in Staron acrylic was designed by Hillam Architects and fabricated by Wave Surfaces.

“It’s all about touch and feel,” Mr Hillam said. “It was rather costly but worth it in the end.”
