Model gives WA designers the nod

Australian supermodel Jennifer Hawkins has worked with some of the world’s biggest designers but she counts Perth’s Aurelio Costarella as one of the best.

In Perth to open the first new Myer store in WA in 20 years, Hawkins was up bright and early to visit – and shop at – the Lakeside Joondalup store.

Hawkins told thewest.com.au that she was amazed by the department store, which was "definitely on par" with those in the Eastern States.

"It really is amazing and the Giftorium is pretty special," she said.

"I’m very impressed."

The face of Myer, Hawkins was thrilled to be a part of the opening weekend festivities and excited to show off new fashions.

"It’s such an honour. I love working for and with Myer," the 30-year-old Sydneysider said.

"I really enjoy opening new stores and seeing growth within the company.

"I also love what it does for a community when I open a store and see everyone come together, there’s such a great vibe."

Hawkins caught up with Australian entertainer Jessica Mauboy at today’s opening, much to the delight of fans whose phone cameras were put to good use.

In town to perform as part of the opening celebrations for the redeveloped Lakeside Joondalup Shopping City, Mauboy said she was thrilled to be back in Perth and to catch up with extended family.

"I love Perth and it definitely reminds me of being in Darwin," Mauboy said between media commitments and greeting fans.

"I think culturally and community-wise it just feels really relaxed and solid – real solid, good people.”

For the opening at Lakeside Joondalup, Hawkins today joined a style workshop with Costarella and Kylie Radford of acclaimed local label Morrison.

Both labels will host an exclusive pop-up boutique at the new store for one month.

Hawkins said Costarella was nothing short of world-class as she sported a red leather dress from his latest spring-summer collection.

"I absolutely love Aurelio Costarella as a designer and a person. WA should be proud," Hawkins said.

"He’s so talented yet so down to earth and so humble for all of his success.

"As soon as I put on one of his dresses I know I’ll feel amazing and sexy."

In the 10 years since Hawkins won the Miss Universe crown, she has worked hard to establish herself in the fashion industry, launching her Cozi swimwear six years ago and, more recently, the JBronze tanning range.
