Innovative interiors recognised at awards
Primary colours and exciting combinations of colour and texture were two of the key trends to emerge from the 2014 Dulux Colour Awards, which recognise the imaginative use of colour by architects and interior designers.
The Grand Prix award went to Melbourne firm McBride Charles Ryan for its work on The Quays apartment development. The project, which was also awarded in the Multi Residential Interior and Multi Residential Exterior categories, was praised for its use of bold, block colour mixed with translucent hues.
Other highlights included a Blairgowrie home by Austin Design Associates, which took out the Single Residential Interior Refurbishment category with its natural palette of Dulux Natural White paired with Dulux Sea Breeze, that the judges said perfectly complemented its beachside location and created a sense of space.
The judging panel for the awards, which were announced last month, included several highly regarded design industry leaders, such as Callum Fraser of architecture firm Elenberg Fraser, contemporary artist Geoffrey Carran, Claire Sullivan, editor-in-chief of New Zealand publications Denizen and Design Folio, and Daniel Dalla Riva, designer and director of interiors at design practice UNO.
The Australian Catholic University Raheen Library by Perth-based Woods Bagot was named best Commercial Interior Refurbishment. It was described by the judges as "a beautiful modernist take on a traditional library".
The Single Residential Exterior award went to Saaj Design for its Reach for the Sky project, which combines charcoals and mineral blues - the perfect palette to reflect the sky, according to the judges. "The gloss base of the house provides the perfect contrast from the textured main structure, which is perched on top," the judges said.
