Major takes out WA fashion award
Jaime Lee Major capped off an incredible year by taking out the top prize at the 18th Annual Western Australian Fashion Awards last night.
Major beat tough competition from Zhivago and One Fell Swoop to be named Most Innovative Designer of the Year at the black-tie event at the State Theatre Centre.
Her win should come as no surprise given the burgeoning success of her label in the past year.
Major started 2013 by dressing her muse Kimbra for the Grammy Awards, which received international coverage when the New Zealand songstress won Record of the Year for her duet with Gotye, Somebody I Used to Know.
The Bali-based designer was then headhunted by some of the leading names in the US fashion industry, and had her intricate designs featured on America's Next Top Model and worn by members of the Kardashian family.
Major returned to her hometown with a solo show at the 2013 Perth Fashion Festival, with some in the audience calling it one of the best fashion shows they had seen.
_The West Australian _'s fashion writer Pip Christmass wrote of the Perth show: "Major's designs, which feature beading, sequins, embroidery and applique, positively sparkled on the runway."
Last night also saw Natalie Donovan's popular ready-to-wear and accessories brand Wild Horses win the Designer For Tomorrow award, while Alister Yiap took out the Fine Details Award for his intricate jewellery.
Catwalk veteran Simone Kerr walked away with Runway Model of the Year, while former Miss Universe finalist Caris Tiivel was named Photographic Model of the Year.
Caitlin Lomax beat off some tough competition to win International Model of the Year.
