Grow your own water lilies
Picture: Guru Productions Sacred lotus.

Water lilies are at their best now and there is an amazing selection to choose from.

Visiting a specialist nursery such as Woodvale Fish and Lily Farm in the middle of the day allows you to look at the different flower colours, sizes and types available.

Some are fragrant, for instance, and adding them to a water-feature pot in an entertaining area not only looks amazing, it smells great too.

One absolutely sensational flowering water plant I revere is the sacred lotus, and now is the time to buy them.

They grow incredibly well in bright sunny spots in tubs, pots and sometimes pond bottoms.

I've learnt so much from my friend Calinda Anderson at Woodvale Fish and Lily Farm about growing them successfully at home and the best advice she ever gave me was to feed them regularly using a special water plant pill (available from water-garden nurseries).

There are double pink forms, double white and a single pink.

If you want a stunning sacred lotus feature for your garden now is the time to buy them.
