Tips to banish thrips in the vegetable garden
Picture: Guru Productions Thrip damage on lettuce leaves.

Thrips are a major problem for flowers at this time of the year and you probably haven't fully realised what's going on.

These microscopic pests scrape the unopened petals at bud stage, causing scarring which manifests itself when the flower opens as a smaller version with brown or dead patches and it's usually malformed.

Applying a systemic insecticide like MaxGuard now will stop the damage and break the breeding cycle for this insidious unseen pest.

A lot of vegetable gardeners are asking why their lettuce foliage has specks all over it. This too is thrip damage and the best control in this instance is using a beneficial pest to work alongside it as you cannot spray them with any chemical if you're going to consume the produce.
