Agrowing number of adults are signing up for gymnastics - and somersaulting, cartwheeling, jumping and back-bending their way to better health.
Gymnastics WA director Ruth Gibbons said in recent times there had been a spike in the number of inquiries from adults wanting to take up the sport.
"More adults are becoming aware that gymnastics is not just about what you see at the Olympics - it's more about general movement, spatial awareness, co-ordination and balance," she said.
"The feedback from some of our clubs is that many older people have a bucket list which includes learning a handstand, backflip or a back salto.
"These requests have become more common over the past couple of years."
Spirit Gym Sports coach David Townsend described gymnastics as "great for a whole body workout".
"It improves your strength, conditioning and flexibility, enhances your balance and teaches you body awareness," he said.
A typical class involves stretching, basic tumbling (forward rolls, backward rolls, handstands, and cartwheels), and strength conditioning activities such as rope climbs, chin-ups and running drills. There's also plenty of equipment to play on, like beams, bars and rings.
Spirit Gym Sports owner and coach Caroline Wright said, contrary to what some people thought, anybody could do gymnastics. Her gym had would-be adult gymnasts of all ages and fitness levels.
"While the typical age group is from 18 to 40, you don't need to be fit or flexible," she said.
Lauren Amos, 27, was initially concerned about the risk of injury in taking up gym as an adult - and whether she would be able to keep up with the class.
"But I've found I can ease my way in at a level I'm comfortable with," she said. "And I'm working out muscle groups I forgot I had."
Mr Townsend said one of the biggest challenges of gymnastics for adults, compared with children, was letting go of their fears. "Often it's hard for older people to turn themselves upside down because it feels strange," he said.
"But gymnastics is a progression sport - you start small and slowly build up your strength, flexibility and confidence."
