Pregnancy is proving to be no hindrance to Jessica Bratich Johnson, who tonight will fly out to show her handbag line under the bright lights of New York City.
The former karate champion has teamed up with local fashion designer Betty Tran to present their latest collections at Fashion Palette New York during New York Fashion Week alongside established names such as Toni Maticevski and Akira Isogawa.
Tran, who will open her flagship store in the new Raine Square shopping complex next month, told AAA she asked Bratich Johnson to collaborate with her after seeing the designer's showcase at Perth Fashion Week earlier in the year.
"I was very impressed with what I saw," Tran said.
"I had the opportunity to look at the collection Jessica designed exclusively for (my) show in New York and they are divine."
Beginning on September 4, Fashion Palette aims to introduce Australian designers to the US market through runway shows and trade events, and represents a big coup for Bratich Johnson after launching her label barely a year ago.
The designer said she was looking forward to exposing her brand to international buyers but also wanted to soak in the moment.
"I'm just going to play it by ear and see where it goes," Bratich Johnson said.
"I haven't done this before so I am taking it as a learning curve and appreciating the experience."
Bratich Johnson, who is married to Australian cricketer Mitchell Johnson, also revealed she has no plans to stop designing once she has her first child, which is due in December.
"I am going to have to plan what I want to do next year," she said.
"This will be my last trip away until I have the baby and then I will go from there."
Tran and Bratich Johnson are set to collaborate again for next month's Perth Fashion Festival, where Tran is showing as part of the WA Designer Collections at 6.30pm on September 21 at Fashion Paramount at the WA Museum.
