Beachside cinema gets the go ahead

A proposed multimillion-dollar Scarborough beach restaurant, bar and outdoor cinema development will go ahead 18 months after being knocked back by City of Stirling planners.

It is understood the State Government’s urban planning authority, which rejected a previous proposal on noise concerns, has granted conditional approval for the Scarborough Boulevard Beach Club to go ahead.

ISpy Entertainment reduced the maximum number of patrons when it resubmitted plans for a cinema and bar on top of a Manning Street carpark to the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority. The cinema would be silent and visitors given headphones.

The proposal was initially knocked back by Stirling in late 2013 before the MRA assumed control of the Scarborough area as part of a wider overhaul of the area.

The beach club will join a growing list of new venues opening their doors in the beachfront suburb.

The influx of new bars, restaurants and cafes into Scarborough include Scarborough Beach Bar, Matisse Beach Club, Squire’s Fortune and popular eateries Hardware Cafe and Health Freak Cafe. The Rendezvous Hotel has also had a multimillion-dollar refurbishment.
