Driver escapes as pole spears through windscreen

A woman has escaped death or serious injury by just centimetres after a metal pole smashed through the windscreen of a car in a crash in Newman.

The P-plate driver was in a silver Holden Barina travelling along Fortescue Avenue about 11pm yesterday when it veered off the road and crashed into a metal chain-link fence near the corner of Newman Drive in Newman.

One of the metal poles struck hit the bonnet and speared through the front and rear windscreens, passing to the left of the driver and missing her by only 15cm.

Police say the 27-year-old woman failed a breath test.

She has had her licence disqualified for two months and will be summonsed to appear on charges of careless driving and fail to display P plates.

She is due to appear in the Newman Magistrates Court on April 14.
