Driver arrested after ground and air pursuit

The police helicopter and dog squad combined to catch an unlicensed driver who allegedly fled his vehicle after a high-speed pursuit south of Perth.

The 26-year-old man’s Holden Commodore was first spotted by officers from the northern response team on Mainsail Terrace, Yangebup, just before 10pm Saturday.

Police allege the man drove at high speed and crossed to the wrong side of the road in an attempt to evade them.

The Holden came to a stop after becoming bogged in sand on Lorimer Road, about 5km from where the pursuit started.

Police dog Storm was deployed when the driver fled his vehicle and with the assistance of the police air wing’s heat detection camera, the man was found hiding in bush land.

He has been refused bail and will face the Perth Magistrate’s Court today.
