Sex offender heckled outside court

A dangerous sex offender has had a confrontation with a member of the public outside a Perth court, after she confronted him about his past offending.

Shane Narkle was jailed indefinitely under WA’s Dangerous Sexual Offenders Act after raping an invalid pensioner in 1987, and then being convicted again for raping a woman while bashing her with a piece of wood in 2004.

But he was released last year, on a strict supervision order which required he abstain from drugs and alcohol.

The 49 year-old was back in court today, facing a charge of breaching his strict supervision order by consuming cannabis earlier this year.

After pleading guilty and being fined $500, Narkle was heckled on the street - and reacted by calling the woman a 'maggot'.

Narkle then denied his past sexual offending when questioned by a TV crew.

Perth Magistrate's Court was told told by Narkle's lawyer Mara Barone that he had consumed cannabis inadvertently, after "bumming" a cigarette.

"He has very little excuse," Ms Barone admitted. Narkle was also ordered to pay costs.

When Narkle was released from jail by Supreme Court Justice John McKechnie last year, the judge said the rapist had a “chronic” risk of reoffending - with "the prospect of continued detention if he fails to abstain".
