Shark problem inspires new thinking

Ocean barriers made of plastic pipes and "smart drum lines" that alert fishermen to a catch are among the innovations that officials will consider to prevent shark attacks in WA.

Scientists revealed the latest shark control methods being researched worldwide at Sharks International in South Africa.

The architect of WA's new drum lines policy, who attended the Durban conference, said he wanted the new technologies tested to see whether they would work off the WA coast.

"Would it apply in our environment," the official, who asked not to be named after being targeted by opponents of the State Government's policy, said. "This is what I want to see."
