Two men have been injured when their boat collided with a large vessel in Fremantle Harbour this afternoon.

The pair were aboard a 10m recreational fishing boat when it collided with the bunker barge Parmelia 1 at the Swan River mouth near South Mole about 1.15pm.

Both men, aged in their 70s, were taken to Fremantle Hospital. One has head injuries and the other suffered minor injuries.

A third man on the boat was not injured.

Fremantle Sea Rescue is understood to have attended and the damaged fishing boat had been towed to shore.

Department of Transport marine investigators are expected to interview those on both vessels to determine why the collision occurred.

The Parmelia 1 is the same vessel that hit the Fremantle rail bridge in 2011, causing disruption to train services.
