A kangaroo has died after suffering extensive injuries when it was shot with a bow and arrow and run over by a motorcycle in Yanchep National Park.

The Department of Parks and Wildlife has called for the public's help to identify the people responsible for shooting two adult kangaroos with arrows in separate incidents in Perth last week.

In the second incident, wildlife officers tranquillised a male kangaroo that had been shot in the ankle at Melville Glades Golf Club.

The injured animal was taken to Perth Zoo to have the arrow surgically removed.

Senior wildlife officer Rick Dawson said firing arrows into defenceless native animals was both cruel and unacceptable behaviour.

"The department is investigating both incidents and we are asking for the public's assistance to identify those responsible," Mr Dawson said.

A ranger found the kangaroo shot near Yanchep Inn at Yanchep National Park on April 11, several days after its death.

"There were two bloodied arrows found near the body and tyre tracks indicating that a motorbike had run over its neck," Mr Dawson said.

"The Leeming kangaroo was lucky that the arrow had not damaged a bone, although it had gone all the way through the ankle flesh.

"After being successfully treated by Perth Zoo vets on April 13, this animal was able to be released back into the resident kangaroo population at the golf club."

People found guilty of injuring or killing kangaroos face a $4000 fine.

The Department of Parks and Wildlife warned that people who are cruel to, or inflict unnecessary harm on an animal face a penalty of up to $50,000 and five years' imprisonment.

People can report cruelty or injuries to native animals to the department's Wildcare Helpline on 9474 9055.
