Cleaver held to woman's throat in siege

A woman was held hostage with a cleaver held to her throat for an hour in a city street as police negotiated with her captor.

The woman was grabbed by the man in a street Kunming News Center in China's south west Yunnan Province today, reports the Daily Mail website.

It is not known if the cleaver-wielding man and his victim knew each other.

The offender held the blade against the young woman's throat while police rushed to the scene, cordoned off the busy street and tried to talk him into letting her go.

The agitated man refused to let his frightened captive go in the 60-minute stand-off.

Eventually, plain-clothes officers took the man by surprise, wrestled him to the ground and detained him.

The relieved hostage emerged unharmed but soon after the man's arrest she fainted.

She was rushed to hospital.

A police officer received injuries on his hand in the arrest.

Chinese police say they do not know why the man took the woman hostage.
