One of Perth's top bartenders hopes his cocktail creation will make its mark in bars around the world.
Rockpool Bar & Grill bar manager David Nguyen-Luu is among Australia's five finalists in the Bacardi Legacy Cocktail competition, which challenges the world's best bartenders to create a cocktail legacy.
"[The aim is] to create a drink that will endure within the industry, stand the test of time and ensure that both the bartender and their drink are remembered like the illustrious classic cocktails of the past," competition organisers said.
Mr Nguyen-Luu was among about 100 entrants from around Australia who agreed to rules including that their cocktail creation have a maximum of six ingredients, which must be commonly available.
He said his cocktail, The Cut Stick, is "the next modern classic" and it is being served in bars "from Perth to Sydney, London, New York and Melbourne".
Mr Nguyen-Luu will take to the stage at The Mint in Sydney on Tuesday to prepare his drink for judges - industry experts "renowned for their distinguished palates and years of bartending experience".
The national winner will represent Australia against bartenders from 24 countries in Russia in May.
The international competition gives "mixologists" an opportunity to take part in "one of the most important cocktail competitions in the world" and Mr Nguyen-Luu, who has 20 years industry experience, is thrilled to be part of the event.
"Bacardi Legacy is one of the most prestigious cocktail competitions in the world, and this is the first time Australia has been allowed to enter," he said.
"Winning this for WA and Australia puts Perth's and Australia's bartenders on the map."
Mr Nguyen-Luu enjoys creating cocktails because it involves "liquid wizardry".
"Being the chef of liquids, being able to marry ingredients and balance flavours is great," he said.
"The best thing also is watching guests, their reactions and enjoyment from every cocktail you make."
Competitors were given a $5000 marketing budget to promote their cocktail on social media, which accounts for 30 points of their total score.
