Eucla police say a truck fire that blocked Eyre Highway was caused by a blown tyre.
The truck was travelling west along the highway on Sunday night when one of its tyres blew just outside of Mundrabilla, about 70km from the WA-South Australian border.
Eucla Sgt David Snowball said the vehicle was transport- ing eight cars when the fire started.
"It set the whole series of events in motion," he said. "The sparks ignited some of the other tyres on board."
Sgt Snowball said the driver was not injured and attempted to put the fire out after pulling the truck over.
"But it was too far gone," he said. "It's basically melted through to the road. The truck is completely gone."
Police and firefighters from Eucla managed to put out the fire about 11.30pm on Sunday but remained at the scene until 2pm yesterday directing traffic.
Sgt Snowball said police would reinspect the scene to determine whether there was any damage to the surface of the highway.
