A 17-year-old boy was lucky to escape a fire that caused about $600,000 damage to his Rivervale home today.

Fire crews were called to the Knutsford Avenue home at about 4.15pm.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said the teenager was home alone when the blaze started.

It is understood the boy and his mother have been tenants in the house for about five years.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
