The police dog squad tracked down a man who abandoned a stolen car in South Perth last night.

About 10pm, police noticed a Toyota Landcruiser being driven erratically on Berwick Street.

A police spokesman said the driver allegedly refused to stop and a short chase was initiated.

Police pursued the vehicle on Berwick Street, into Canning Highway and through a McDonald's car park before losing sight of the car.

The stolen 4WD, which allegedly had false number plates, was later found abandoned on Manning Terrace.

The dog squad was called in to track the offender and found him on the foreshore about 400m from the car.

A search of the car revealed items belonging to the man.

The man has been charged with stealing a motor vehicle, failing to stop, reckless driving and stealing.

Police seized the Toyota Landcruiser for further forensic examination.
