Hostile mob hinders paramedics, police

A 54-year-old Shoalwater man has been charged with assaulting a public officer after an incident at a pub in Rockingham last night.

Just before 9pm, St John Ambulance paramedics were called to Rockingham Hotel on Kent Street where a woman had reportedly collapsed into a seizure.

Paramedics were met by a hostile group, some of whom were allegedly fighting and hindering their efforts to treat the woman.

One person was sitting on the patient and refusing to move, preventing the paramedics from reaching her, a spokesman said.

Police were called in to deal with the violent mob about 9pm. When they arrived, one police officer was allegedly struck in the face.

More back-up was called and the situation eventually brought under control, allowing paramedics to treat the stricken woman.

A 54-year-old man was arrested and a police officer received treatment for minor facial injuries.
