A 29-year-old Orelia man has been charged after he allegedly stole a woman's car when she left her keys on the sand at Cottesloe Beach yesterday.

Police said the keys were taken from the beach sometime between 11.30am and 12.30pm and the woman's Toyota Prado was stolen from the car park.

The woman flagged down a passing police vehicle and the stolen car was spotted in Smyth Road, Nedlands, about 1pm.

Police arrested the man and will allege he had a can of capsicum spray.

In the short time he had the car the man also allegedly used a credit card he found in the stolen vehicle.

The man has been charged with stealing a motor vehicle, fraud and possession of a controlled weapon and is due to appear in court this morning.
