A mulch fire in Bayswater is causing traffic havoc in the eastern suburbs this morning.

Fire crews from eight stations are battling the blaze, which started about 3.15am at Pure Earth on Clune Street.

It forced the closure of Tonkin Highway in both directions between Morley Drive and Guildford Road. Tonkin Highway has now reopened, but the left southbound lane remains closed. Collier Road is closed in both directions between Tonkin Highway and Jackson Street.

A Main Roads spokeswoman said Tonkin Highway was extremely congested and motorists should avoid the area or allow plenty of travel time.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued a smoke alert for people in Morley and Embleton.

DFES spokesman John Henderson said nearby residents with respiratory conditions should turn off their air conditioners.

“Experience says these sorts of fires burn for a long time,” he said.
