Former West Coast player Beau Wilkes is no longer known by that name.

The current St Kilda squad member has changed his name legally, to Beau Maister.

According to a statement by the Saints, Wilkes, a WAFL premiership player with Claremont, officially changed to his mother's surname on Wednesday.

“It’s a personal decision that I have been thinking about for a while. I just felt now is the right time to change my name. I feel strongly about the decision I’ve made,” Maister told Saints.com.au.

“The paperwork went through this morning so now I can focus on footy with the NAB Cup just around the corner.”

Maister isn't the first AFL player to adopt a new name during his playing career.

Geelong defender Max Rooie started out as Jarad Rooke before formally taking on his middle name in 2006 to honour both grandfathers.

Hawthorn defender Brian Lake started his time in the AFL as Brian Harris.
