Fremantle independent MP Adele Carles has weighed into the euthanasia debate, saying she will introduce legislation into the Lower House if re-elected in March.

The move comes after The West Australian published the story of Barbara Harrison, a 64-year-old mother of two and bedridden multiple sclerosis sufferer who took her own life on Sunday night.

Ms Harrison was a pro-euthanasia campaigner.

Ms Carles said today Ms Harrison’s story should send “a clear message to all politicians that enough is enough and in a civilised society people deserve to end their lives on their terms.”

“What are we waiting for?,” she said.

“How many more people like Barbara Harrison will have to die alone having suffered so long?”

The last time WA politicians voted on euthanasia in 2010 it was defeated in the Upper House 24-11.

Greens MP Robin Chapple, who introduced that Bill, has left the door open to reintroducing similar laws if there is sufficient support.
