School zone warning for drivers

Drivers are being urged to slow down in school zones when children return to class next week after police issued close to 45,000 speeding tickets to people flouting the 40km/h limit last year - almost 20 per cent more than in 2011.

As police revealed 287 of the 43,902 school-zone infringements handed out last year were to motorists going at least 30km/h over the limit, national insurer AAMI released a survey finding that one in six Perth drivers admitted ignoring 40km/h speed limits around schools.

AAMI spokesman Reuben Aitchison said children had limited road safety awareness and experience so drivers had to take more care. A police spokesman reminded drivers that school speed zones would be in effect from Monday and urged drivers to be vigilant. Police issued 35,919 infringements to drivers speeding in school zones in 2011.
