Man left for dead in Northbridge hit-run

A Perth bricklayer has described how he was left for dead on a street in Northbridge in an alleged hit-and-run incident.

Matthew Shinn, 39, had been watching a movie with friends in the Northbridge Piazza on Wednesday.

He was crossing Newcastle Street about lam when he was allegedly hit by a white ute.

"I'd had a few drinks, next minute I was screaming on the road," he said.

A passing motorist who witnessed the incident told police he followed the ute down the road after the driver took off without stopping to check on Mr Shinn.

Mr Shinn was taken to Royal Perth Hospital. His voice shook as he listed his injuries. "I've got broken ribs, broken vertebrae, broken arm and a big gash on my leg - just broken all over," he said yesterday.

Mr Shinn said he was lost for words at the driver's decision to leave him lying on the road. "I understand if he was scared, because I didn't move at first," he said. "At first I couldn't breathe and I thought I was going to die on the side of the road."

Police yesterday charged a 26-year-old Subiaco man with dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm and failing to render assistance.

He is due to appear in Perth Magistrate's Court on February 14.

Witnesses to the incident are urged to contact police on 131 444.
