Police have called off a search sparked by the discovery of an empty kayak washed up on Preston Beach this morning after they discovered it was lost by two fishermen on Monday.

The sea kayak and its oars were found strewn across more than a kilometre off beachfront just before 9am.

A GPS unit and a fishing rod were found in the Kayak.

A Water Police spokesman said they had received no reports of anyone in distress.

A search was launched but police now say that the kayak was lost in rough weather by two men fishing out from Preston Beach on Monday 7.

The two swam back to shore after the kayak was swamped.
