Man’s best friend he may be, but one pooch will be in the doghouse this week after it inadvertently alerted police to what was allegedly its owners’ drug stash.

Police in Scarborough noticed a dog running across a busy road as they pulled into the local police station yesterday.

Concerned it would be hit by a car, they followed it across the road and down a laneway opposite the police station.

The dog went to a unit in Hinderwell Street where its owner was found.

Police allege they also found a loaded syringe and cash sitting on a table in the flat.

A search located other drugs in the house and an unlicensed shotgun and ammunition in a vehicle belonging to one of the house’s occupants.

A 31-year-old man from Queens Park will appear in Perth Magistrate's Court on January 10 charged with possessing an unlicensed firearm and unlicensed ammunition.

A 45-year-old Beverley woman will be charged by summons with possession of a prohibited drug and possession of a smoking implement.

A 32-year-old Scarborough man will also be summoned for allowing premises to be used for the purpose of using a prohibited drug and two counts of possessing a prohibited drug.
