People living in inland parts of the Pilbara are being warned to brace for bush fires as catastrophic fire conditions take hold.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services today upgraded the fire danger rating today from severe to catastrophic – the worst possible conditions for a bush or grass fire - for inland parts of the Pilbara after a change in weather conditions.
The warning includes residents in the eastern parts of the Shire of East Pilbara.
People in the area are warned to stay alert and watch for signs of fire and to have a bushfire survival plan and kit ready.
Hot, dry and windy conditions are also threatening fires in the inland western part of the Shire of East Pilbara and the Town of Port Hedland, where a severe fire danger rating is in place for today.
The Bureau of Meteorology has also revised the fire danger rating for today for the Goldfields, upgrading it from very high to severe.
The western part of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Shire of Coolgardie, western part of the Shire of Dundas, south western corner of the Shire of Laverton, Shire of Leonora, central part of the Shire of Menzies, parts of the Shire of Sandstone adjacent to Leonora Shire and the south western corner of the Shire of Wiluna are told to be on high alert.
If a fire starts and takes hold people are advised to prepare to the highest level, leave bushfire risk areas early in the day and read through their bushfire survival plan or decide what to do if a fire starts.
Those with homes that are prepared to the highest level must be physically and mentally prepared to defend them.
