Port Adelaide have selected Claremont's Sandover Medal winner Kane Mitchell with their rookie draft pick No5.
Mitchell had been a touted as a possible target for Collingwood.
Mitchell had an amazing year in which he won the Sandover Medal and was one of Claremont’s best on ground in their second consecutive premiership in September.
The 23-year-old midfielder, who has been battling for a number of years to get onto an AFL list, kicked 30 goals in the Tigers' 2012 premiership season.
Port Adelaide's national recruiting manager Geoff Parker described Mitchell as “a mature-age player who will add depth to our list”.
“We liked his speed and endurance mix and he had an outstanding season at Claremont, including in the grand final,” he said.
“He’s an outside ball carrier with speed and that something we’ve been looking for this draft period.”
Mitchell's Claremont teammate Shannon Taylor, who had been training at Eseendon with the overlooked Dayle Garlett, failed to get picked up.
